usually with hybrid suv's youre paying to get pretty much the same gas economy as a conventional gasoline compact car. with the lexus rx400h youre really just getting 25 mpg and a gti would definitely match or do better than that. but then a gti is smaller and lighter. in my opinion if you really wanna save gas either: get a hybrid compact car like the prius, get a small diesel, or get a car with a tiny engine like the yaris or fit. a hybrid suv like the toyota highlander hybrid costs about 45000 dollars i believe for a car that does just about 25-27 mpg. the regular highlander does around 17-23. if you had to choose between a gti and a hybrid suv and care for gas get the gti its cheaper. unless you needa carry stuff

Wow, apparently the GTI compact sucks at gas mileage. I drive a 2002 Chevy Camaro SS with a big ol' 5.7 liter V8 and it gets 19/29 mpg. I've tracked my mileage over the life of the car and I'm averaging about 25-26 mpg.

Its ridiculous that ALL cars don't get better mileage. We don't need hybrids we need smart design.

And electric cars/plug-in hybrids...

That depends on the kind of driving you plan on doing. The hybrid is designed to switch to electricty at city speeds, while using gas on the highway. If you drive extensively on the highway, your MPG will be up in the normal SUV range. If you drive a lot in a city, you'll get better mileage with an SUV.

Why not solve the problem and buy a hybrid compact car?

i think that the hybrid SUV's are a joke. i have seen the same motor in the hybrid chevy suv as in the chevy non hybrid 3500 pickup and the non hybrid gets better gas miallage. so in my opinion the better chouce if you dont need an SUV get the car and dont forget the SUV is only blinding you on the fuel miallage because of its bigger tank that is how they also rate fuel miallage consumption and tank size

roughly the same gas mileage, but the GTI will look better, handle better, perform better, and you can get it in either 4wheel drive or Front wheel drive, and with a 5-speed, or 6-speed, depending on which model you go with....and should you decide to moddify it later down the road for more power, the GTI would be the obvious choice...

The average SUV hybrid has FWD- 36 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. 4WD- 32 mpg city and 24 highway.
The VW GTI has RWD- 25 mpg city and 31 highway.

it depends on the highway no the compact car will always have better gas millage than the hybrid. but in the city it depends on the engine size the smaller hybrid engines will get better city but the larger still won't be as good as a compact car.

There's a new hybrid suv on the market. The chevy tahoe gets 20/20. I read a car and driver article reviewing it, and they got up to 19mpg in the city, which (i believe) is close to the rating for the GTI's city mpg. I find this quite impressive seeing as how the Tahoe hybrid weighs almost 6000 pounds- twice that of the VW!

Well, if we look at Ford's Escape Hybrid, they say it is gets 34 city / 30 highway. A VW GTI is probably one of Volk's worst performers in the gas mileage category, but they say it gets 24 city / 33 highway. Obviously, the way hybrids work they do much better in the city (starting from a standstill is 90%+ off the electrical). On the highway, they should be similar as a Hybrid uses the electrical motor to start moving, but switches to gas engine once it has attained a certain speed.
